In this Series we will be discussing laundry detergents. Commonly used in many households, but what many consumers fail to even question is the ingredients. Let’s explore just six of the many chemicals found in most laundry detergents that can be very harmful to You and your family.
1. Fragrances
Fragrances consist of hundreds of chemicals and the vast majority of those chemicalsare not even used fur cleaning. They merely make you believe your clothes are clean based upon what you smell. Fragrances are counted in the top five allergens and can trigger asthma attacks.
2. Surfactants
Surfactants consist of many types of cleaning agents used in laundry detergent. One your is petrolium distillate or naphtha. Napthas derived from synthetic crude oil and are used to dissolve grease and grime. Napthas also have been linked to damage of the mucus membranes and lungs as well as inflammation, asthma and even cancer.
3. Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
Bleach has extremely toxic properties. When beach reacts with organic materials in the environment, it generates chlorinated VOC’s which are very toxic and are considered human carcinogens. Bleach is easily one of the most dangerous chemicals to have in your household.
4. 1,4 Dioxane (or Diethyle Oxide)
Dioxane is a chemical by-product of Ethoxylation. This is used by companies to make the product softer and sudsier at your health expense..1,4 Dioxane is a contaminant and also a carcinogen and not required to be listed on your product labels.
5. LAS – Linear Alkylbenzene
LAS’s are synthetic petrochemicals.
You may see them listed as anionis surfactants on a product label. LAS is oneof the most common surfactants used in detergents and may compromise up to 30% of the total weight.
6. NPE- Nonylphenol Ethoxylates
NPE’ s are a type of inexspensive nonionic surfactant. Although it’s used in the U.S., it is banned in The European Union and Canada.
NPE’s carry a long list of health adversaties including damage to fetal development and physical functions.
Choose natural soaps for your laundry instead. Laundry detergents made from olive oil and coconut oil do a wonderful job on your clothes and is perfectly safe.
The same goes for whites with peroxide and vinegar.
